DOCUMENTATION FOR INDIVIDUAL WEEKLY WAGE AND SALARY INCOME FROM THE MARCH CPS This text file contains an explanation of the weekly individual wage and salary income files (wklywage_smooth and wklywage_raw). These data were calculated using the unicon-created variable "wklywg" which measures individual weekly wage and salary income from the previous year. This variable is created by dividing the respondent’s annual wage and salary income from the previous year ("incwag") by the total number of weeks they worked the previous year ("wkslyr"). The data are organized in state-year format. There are 40 observations (1963-2002) for each state, plus the District of Columbia and an observation with the total for the US (= 2,080 records). All earnings data have been adjusted to 2002 dollars using the CPI deflator for all urban consumers. The columns of the text file are separated by spaces and do not contain variable names; in these text-format files, state names are surrounded by quotation marks and two-word names contain spaces (e.g.,"New York"). The variables in the data appear in the following order: 1. statename 2. stcode - Two-letter state postal abbreviation 3. year 4. p10wklywg - 10th percentile of total weekly wage & salary income (all) 5. p20wklywg - 20th percentile of total weekly wage & salary income (all) 6. p30wklywg - 30th percentile of total weekly wage & salary income (all) 7. p40wklywg - 40th percentile of total weekly wage & salary income (all) 8. p50wklywg - 50th percentile (median) of total weekly wage & salary income (all) 9. p60wklywg - 60th percentile of total weekly wage & salary income (all) 10. p70wklywg - 70th percentile of total weekly wage & salary income (all) 11. p80wklywg - 80th percentile of total weekly wage & salary income (all) 12. p90wklywg - 90th percentile of total weekly wage & salary income (all) 13. meanwklywg - average total weekly wage & salary income (all) 14. minwklywg - Minimum total weekly wage & salary income (all) 15. maxwklywg - Maximum total weekly wage & salary income (all) 16. sdwklywg - Standard deviation of total weekly wage & salary income (all) 17. ineqwklywg - Ratio of the 90th percentile of total weekly wage & salary income to the 10th percentile of total weekly wage & salary income (all) 18. gini_wklywg - Gini coefficient for total weekly wage & salary income (all) 19. n_wklywg - Number of non-missing values (all) 20. nwgt_wklywg - Weighted number of non-missing values (all) 21. men_p10wklywg - 10th percentile of total weekly wage & salary income (men) 22. men_p20wklywg - 20th percentile of total weekly wage & salary income (men) 23. men_p30wklywg - 30th percentile of total weekly wage & salary income (men) 24. men_p40wklywg - 40th percentile of total weekly wage & salary income (men) 25. men_p50wklywg - 50th percentile (median) of total weekly wage & salary income (men) 26. men_p60wklywg - 60th percentile of total weekly wage & salary income (men) 27. men_p70wklywg - 70th percentile of total weekly wage & salary income (men) 28. men_p80wklywg - 80th percentile of total weekly wage & salary income (men) 29. men_p90wklywg - 90th percentile of total weekly wage & salary income (men) 30. men_meanwklywg - average total weekly wage & salary income (men) 31. men_minwklywg - Minimum total weekly wage & salary income (men) 32. men_maxwklywg - Maximum total weekly wage & salary income (men) 33. men_sdwklywg - Standard deviation of total weekly wage & salary income (men) 34. men_ineqwklywg - Ratio of the 90th percentile of total weekly wage & salary income to the 10th percentile of total weekly wage & salary income (men) 35. men_gini_wklywg - Gini coefficient for total weekly wage & salary income (men) 36. men_n_wklywg - Number of non-missing values (men) 37. men_nwgt_wklywg - Weighted number of non-missing values (men) 38. wom_p10wklywg - 10th percentile of total weekly wage & salary income (women) 39. wom_p20wklywg - 20th percentile of total weekly wage & salary income (women) 40. wom_p30wklywg - 30th percentile of total weekly wage & salary income (women) 41. wom_p40wklywg - 40th percentile of total weekly wage & salary income (women) 42. wom_p50wklywg - 50th percentile (median) of total weekly wage & salary income (women) 43. wom_p60wklywg - 60th percentile of total weekly wage & salary income (women) 44. wom_p70wklywg - 70th percentile of total weekly wage & salary income (women) 45. wom_p80wklywg - 80th percentile of total weekly wage & salary income (women) 46. wom_p90wklywg - 90th percentile of total weekly wage & salary income (women) 47. wom_meanwklywg - average total weekly wage & salary income (women) 48. wom_minwklywg - Minimum total weekly wage & salary income (women) 49. wom_maxwklywg - Maximum total weekly wage & salary income (women) 50. wom_sdwklywg - Standard deviation of total weekly wage & salary income (women) 51. wom_ineqwklywg - Ratio of the 90th percentile of total weekly wage & salary income to the 10th percentile of total weekly wage & salary income (women) 52. wom_gini_wklywg - Gini coefficient for total weekly wage & salary income (women) 53. wom_n_wklywg - Number of non-missing values (women) 54. wom_nwgt_wklywg - Weighted number of non-missing values (women) 55. cpideflator - Deflator used to adjust values for inflation (this is provided so that the user may calculate the unadjusted values). This deflator uses the consumer price index and is uniform for all states. 56. statecpi - This is a state-specific deflator from 1963 to 2000, except for Alaska and Hawaii. A description of how this deflator was created can be found in Berry, William D., Richard Fording and Russell Hanson, "An annual cost of living index for the American states, 1960-1995", Journal of Politics, 62:550-567. The updated deflator files can be found at http://www.icpsr.umich.edu:8080/ICPSR-STUDY/01275.xml UNIVERSE: The March CPS universe for personal weekly wage and salary income includes only private and government employees. We excluded respondents who reported working 0 weeks in the previous year and those reporting wage and salary income of $1 or less. For more information, see unicon documentation below or visit http://www.unicon.com. WEIGHTING: We used the "wgt" variable provided by unicon, divided by 100, to produce weighted estimates. IMPUTATION: Since the CPS grouped some states together from 1968-1976, the values for most individual states were imputed for these years. For a description of the methodology used for this imputation, see Appendix B of our report at: http://www.princeton.edu/~joshg/inequality/IneqDataReport.pdf. Maximum and minimum values, as well as N's, were not imputed from 1968-1976. They are recorded as missing values for those years. *********************************************************************************** UNICON DOCUMENTATION: _wklywg Average weekly earnings last year Topic: income Related variables: incwag - Income from wage and salary _wkslyr - Weeks worked last year _wklywg=(_incwag/_wkslyr) incwag - Income from wage and salary 62 63-67 68-75 76-88 88B-99 P133 P131 P67 P191 P243 6 10 6 5 6 I51A WSAL-VAL Note: 1962-1967 Universe - adults (14<=age) 1968-1988 Universe - adults (1<=popstat<=2) 1988B-1999 Universe - those who received any wage and salary (incs15=1) _wkslyr - Weeks worked last year 62 63-67 68-75 76-88 88B-99 P181 P103 P131 P134 P171 1 1 1 2 2 I34WK WKSWORK Code: Recode: 62 63-75 76-99 62-99 NIU 0 -> 0 00 0 - 52 weeks 0 0 -> 1 -> 0 01-52 weeks 1 - 13 1 -> 2 -> 8.760 14 - 26 2 -> 3 -> 22.4337 27 - 39 3 -> 4 -> 34.2329 40 - 47 4 -> 5 -> 43.1387 48 - 49 5 -> 6 -> 48.2935 50 - 52 6 -> 7 -> 51.9123 Armed Forces 9 -> 0 Note: 1962 Universe - Feb-Mar match (match=0) 1963-1967 Universe - Feb-Mar match (match=1) 1968-1988 Universe - civilian adults (popstat=1) 1988B-1999 Universe - those who worked anytime last year (nowork=1 or wktemp=1) WARNING - In 1963-1967, there are several occurences of positive incwag values with Armed Forces (weeks worked not indicated; wkslyr=9).
